If you are a member in good standing, and you believe that your ratings do not accurately reflect your boat’s performance, then you can request a rating review for your boat up to once every calendar year.
It is very important that you have some race results to justify the rating changes that you’re requesting. We have simplified the application form, and ask that you send us links to your race results rather than completing a spreadsheet with time offsets, etc.
Some things to keep in mind:
– base ratings for the same types of boats are generally the same unless there are modifications to the boat to consider.
– the SoCal PHRF is a performance-based rating system that determines handicap ratings based upon a boat’s performance in sailboat races.
– some factors that are specifically NOT considered in determining the base ratings of your boat are the age of the boat’s sails or other racing equipment, any cruising equipment that may be on board, and the age of the crew.
– regional ratings are based upon 8-12 knots of wind.
– area ratings are sometimes assigned to accommodate local racing conditions.
– rating adjustments that are related to cruising type equipment are not part of a boat’s base ratings. These items are handled with built in boat “configuration adjustments”. These sorts of adjustments are discussed in Appendix F of the Rules. For the cruising equipment that qualifies, you will get some time credit. Receiving configuration adjustments does not require a rating review. Please see the Configuration Adjustment page for details on how to make this happen.
For a review of your ratings, please download and complete the Request for Rating Review form below and email it to the Fleet Secretary. Once you submit your Request for Rating Review, the Fleet Secretary will be in touch with you to discuss any missing information and scheduling your review at one of the Regional meetings, held most months. There is generally a waitlist of boats to be reviewed.
