Get A Rating

IMPORTANT MESSAGE

Your boat must have a unique US Sailing (or other country) race number before you can get a rating from PHRF Socal.  This is not your hull number.  If your boat does not have a US Sailing race number, you can get one locally through the Southern California Yacht Racing Association.  Go to this page to get a US Sailing race number.

Next, please review the sections below and find the description that best meets your needs.  From there, you will be directed to the actions you need to take to get a rating.

EXISTING MEMBER, NEW PERMANENT RATING, YOUR SAIL NUMBER IS NOT IN OUR SYSTEM

  • Are you an existing member with a new boat that needs a rating?
  • Are you an existing member with a boat that you have made modifications to, and you want an additional rating for it?

If either of the above describe your situation, we treat these like a new member.  You’ll need a sail number and all your boat measurements.  Then please fill out this New Member Application Form and send in your payment.  You’ll be directed to the payments page after you submit the form.  This is an annual rating that expires at the end of the calendar year. You have to renew it each year to stay in the Valid Fleet List.

NEW MEMBER, NEW PERMANENT RATING, YOUR SAIL NUMBER IS NOT IN OUR SYSTEM

  • Are you new to PHRF Socal, and you have a boat that you want to start racing?

Great, glad you’re getting into racing!  The first thing you’ll need is a sail number.  You will also need to gather information and measurements for your boat.  Then please fill out this New Member Application Form.  Have a look at the How To Join page to learn about the steps to take to get a rating for your boat.

NEW TEMPORARY RATING, YOUR SAIL NUMBER IS NOT IN OUR SYSTEM

  • Are you in need of a quick rating for an upcoming race?
  • Would you like to get a permanent rating, but you don’t have any race results yet to bring in for your rating review?

This is a 120 day temporary rating for situations like the above.  Please visit the Temporary Rating page to get a temporary rating.

NEW OWNER TO AN EXISTING BOAT WITH A RATING ANYTIME IN THE PAST

  • Are you the new owner of a boat that’s in our system, but the certificate is not registered in your name?

If you are the proud owner of a boat that’s already in our system, we treat this similar to a new member, and ask that you please fill out this Change of Ownership form and send in your payment.  You’ll be directed to the payments page after you submit the form.  This is an annual rating that expires at the end of the calendar year. You have to renew it each year to stay in the Valid Fleet List.

RATING FOR A VISITING YACHTSMAN OR YACHTSWOMAN

Are you bringing your boat from another region of the country, or from another country to do a race here in Southern California?  Please contact the Fleet Office with information about your boat and the date of your race.

NEW RATING, YOUR EXISTING RATING IS INACCURATE OR INCORRECT

If for any reason you don’t think your existing rating is accurate or correct, you can appeal your rating.  Generally this involves stating your case to the board.  Please visit the Appeal Your Rating page for more information.

If you think you should get some rating “credit” for cruising equipment you keep on your boat, these are called Configuration Adjustments.  Cruising equipment is reported just like any other boat data.  Please visit the Configuration Adjustment page for more information.

If you think you should get some rating “credit” for the local conditions in your area, you can apply for Area Adjustments.  Please visit the Area Adjustments page for more information.

You may want to contact your Area Representative to learn more about the rating appeal process, or getting configuration or area adjustments to your rating.

NEW RATING, YOUR RATING CERTIFICATE IS EXPIRED

Rating certificates expire at the end of each calendar year.  Technically you are not allowed to race without a valid rating certificate.   When you renew your membership, the rating you have does not change.  Renewing your certificate will update your existing certificate to the current year, and put you into the Valid Fleet List.  Please visit the Membership Renewal page for further information.
