How To Join In Five Steps
1. Join An SCYA Affiliated Yacht Club
Check the SCYA website for a list of affiliate member clubs. Contact yacht clubs near you to decide which one best meets your needs.
2. Get a Sail Number from SCYA and Put it On Your Racing Sails
A sail number is an official number assigned to you by the SCYA. You cannot just make this number up, and it is not your hull number. The exception to this is if your class of boat has written class rules stating you may use your hull number and is in a local organization with at least 5 members. If you purchased a boat with an existing sail number, check with SCYA to see about transferring the existing sail number to your name. To get a new sail number, fill out this form on the SCYA website. To get the actual stick-on numbers, you can contact any sailmaker, or buy them online (BoatUS and others) and do it yourself.
3. Gather the Necessary Boat Measurements
To start with, you may want to print out our MEASUREMENTS GUIDE to get a general idea of the kinds of measurements that we need. Measuring yourself is usually not the best idea, especially if you have a “stock” boat. The best resource for boat measurement help is to look through our database for boats that are the same as yours, and use the same measurements. This can save you a lot of time and trouble. Look under the Boat Ratings tab; there are a lot of ways to search through our database. Next, check your boat manufacturer’s website for the specs on your particular model. If you have a one of a kind or rare boat you may have to do some measuring. Along with your application, please email us any PHRF, IRC, ORR and/or other rating certificates for the boat along with pictures or drawings or brochures with the application. Many local sailmakers are also willing to help you gather boat measurements.
4. Fill Out and Submit the New Member Application
Warning: the New Member Application Form doesn’t display very well on a cell phone.
5. Pay the Membership Fee of $90
After you submit the New Member Application Form you’ll be redirected to the payment gateway to make your payment online. If you prefer to pay by check, send in a check to the Fleet Office with your Sail Number on the check.
General Information
If your new membership and payment are received after the Fall General Members Meeting, your dues will be good for the remainder of the current year and the following year. Your PHRF rating will be determined by the Chief Handicapper along with members who volunteer to serve on the local and regional boards.
Most applications will be processed in a couple of days to a week. You will receive an email letting you know that your certificate is available online. Once you get your certificate, be sure to check it to confirm that all the information is correct. PHRF of Southern California reserves the right to refuse a membership.
